Biography
Born in Bielefeld (Germany) Ulrich Pöhl began his musical training at the music school of his hometown. While visiting public school he studied percussion at the Conservatory in Detmold, Germany. In 1994 he was pricewinner at the German national competition for Young Musicians. After high school he continued his studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. During this time he played with several Dutch orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Radio Chamber Orchestra under conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Peter Eötvös, Leonard Slatkin, Mstlav Rostropovich and Ricardo Chailly. Ulrich Pöhl was winner of the Amsterdam Vriendenkranswettbewerbes of the Royal Concertgebouw and was awarded the Zyldjian international award for his efforts in modern music and received a scholarship of the Dutch NFPK. In 1997 he spent the summer in Senegal in order to study african music and in 2000 he attended the University of San Diego. Ulrich Pöhl was assistant to the conductors Michel Tabachnik and Zsolt Nagy. In 2011 during the preparation of his new SACD "Pierrot to Marteau" Ulrich Pöhl did work with Pierre Boulez on his interpretation of "Le Marteau sans Maître". His first SACD was awarded the quarterly Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Since 1997 he is artistic director and chief conductor of the Dutch ensemble "Insomnio". He has conducted orchestras and ensembles in the Netherlands, Germany, England, France, Spain, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Italy, Slovenia. Hungary, South Africa, Indonesia, China and the United States. He worked with oustanding soloists as Christoph Pregardien, Mieko Kanno, Nicholas Isherwood, Veli Kujalla and Irvine Arditti. Ulrich Pöhl has premiered many new compositions and has made a number of radio recordings and television productions for among others the German Radio (DLF, MDR, WDR, SWR), Radio France, the BBC and several Dutch Radio- and Television companies. Ulrich Pöhl was head of the Contemporary Music department at the State Academy of Music in Trossingen, Germany and he was professor of conducting at the International Eotvos Institute in Budapest, Hungary.
Ulrich Pöhl’s playing field is divers. During the last month he worked with a broad range of orchestra’s like Brussels Philharmonic, Avanti Chamber Orchestra, choir Le Prix de Paris, the Netherlands Chamber Choir, Synergy Vocals and Insomnio.
